There are multiple well logs and each measures a different aspect of the well. This article will outline a few of the different types of well logs, and what they are used for.  Caliper Log The most basic of the logs is the caliper log. The caliper log ultimately measures the diameter of the well bore. There are three major caliper logs; a two arm caliper measures the maximum diameter, a three arm caliper measures the average diameter of the well bore, and a four arm caliper measures the maximum and minimum diameter of the borehole. This is very important, as it has implications as to the strength of the rock. Shales will crumble and give a bigger diameter, while sandstone or limestone are tougher and the caliper log usually reads a smaller diameter.  Spontaneous Potential A spontaneous potential log ultimately tells the company about the permeability of the formation in question. A spontaneous potential log reads the difference in salinity between the drilling mud and the formation water. In areas that are mainly shale, the spontaneous potential log will read zero. Shale acts as a barrier to the drilling mud, and does not allow  difference in salinity to develop. In a permeable sandstone, a salinity gradient will develop and the spontaneous potential log will show a clean sandstone. This allows an oil companies to focus on permeable zones.  Gamma Ray One of the most popular logs is a gamma ray log. This is a passive tool that measures the amount of radioactivity in the formation. The vertical resolution of this tool is very good, and is accurate to a few inches. Shales will have more radioactivity because they contain more feldspars which have potassium, thorium, and uranium. Sandstones and limestones, which are potential hydrocarbon reservoirs, will have very little radioactive minerals. So, this log gives oil companies an idea of potential hydrocarbon reservoirs. This includes conventional oil plays, and unconventional gas reservoirs that require fracturing.
